Bellato Union — history

Bellato

The Bellato Federation is a nation that has found harmony between technology and magic as it advanced. Its military doctrine rests on legions of huge battle robots carrying weapons of incredible destructive force. The Bellato are born traders, and it was their greed and their thirst for power that led them to a policy of colonisation. To secure a foothold for further expansion, the Federation's forces must hold the planet Novus against the Accretians and the Cora. Sooner or later, without any doubt, that hunger for expansion and the greed with which the Federation swallows new worlds will bring about its ruin.

A history of the robot legions

The events that began the mechanisation of the Federation's forces had nothing to do with war. Protective suits and powered work rigs were all developed for scientific research, space expeditions and construction. But the further the Federation pushed into space, the more dangerous space became, and the more warlike the Federation grew with it. The Federation became an army, and its research equipment became war machines.

The results of the very first battles involving those machines were reason enough for the Federation's ruling council to begin mass production. The army grew, and the war machines multiplied. Several crushing defeats inflicted on the legions in the Novus sector by Accretian missile units forced the Federation to rethink the design of its machines, so that they would suit combat in the local terrain.

In time, production reached such a scale that it very nearly exhausted the resources of the Bellato homeworld. The Federation's Military Committee promptly ruled that every war machine be placed at the army's disposal, and forbade civilians to own even non-combat models. That is how the legions became the decisive military force.

Later, to save cost, production was standardised. Most personal models were destroyed or fell out of service, and army units moved to two main types, the Goliath and the Ballista. The Goliath's servo-driven joints were built to a special design able to bear very heavy loads, and its armour plates are arranged to give maximum protection against every kind of weapon; this robot is meant for close-range fighting. The Ballista was created to support it, with firepower that, together with the latest anti-radar and detection systems, lets it suppress an enemy at long range with ease.
